My 10-year-old son has a cheap laptop that works for Geometry Dash but not much else. It’s so incredibly slow that I dread anytime I have to get on it to install software or update a login. Click a button. Wait. Click another button. Wait. It’s that bad.

So for Christmas, grandpa came to the rescue and bought him a refurbished computer with a much faster processor and all of those other computer things that means it will work better.

To go with it, my son’s request as a gift from me was for the two of us to build him a new desk together.

It’s hard to say no to a request like that!

We’ve been doing projects around the house together since we moved in her three and a half years ago, so my kids have gotten increasingly comfortable with using a drill, and my son talks often about projects he wants us to do.

He’s got a very specific idea in his head for what the desk will look like; he often has very specific ideas of how he wants projects to turn out. He’s drawn a diagram, and we’ve made Trip #1 to Home Depot to look at wood and colors of stain.

Today – the first official day of the holiday break from school and work – we’re dismantling the small desk and bookshelf he had been using to make room for the new.

It’s “Before” Day! Fingers crossed we can get to the “After” before the break is over!
