I love planners.

I love fresh, clean pages. I love the possibilities. I love the idea of being organized and productive. I love when things are neat and pretty.

Over the years I’ve tried quite a few different planners, printed and digital.

The ones I’ve designed for myself tend to work best for me. I take my favorite bits from all of the other planners I’ve seen on Pinterest and for sale and have come up with a version that makes sense to me.

This current version I’ve been using for two weeks, and I’m really pleased with it. I’d been using a digital planner for the last few months, but it feels good to be back on paper. Paper carries with it the fear of a spilled cup of coffee ruining everything, but it’s just so much easier to be able to jot things down throughout the day. I’m using it more consistently, which is pretty much the whole point.

I was obsessed with bullet journals for a while, but I don’t have the time or patience to start with a blank page every day. I did steal one idea, though I use it backwards. In my planner, I use an open circle to mark a task; when the task is done I fill in the circle and cross out the words. I use a rectangle to mark meetings and other things happening at a specific time; this way I can show how long the meeting/event actually takes in the course of the day.

I’ve been using the Arc system for a while to hold the pages all together. I like that it gives me the flexibility to add and take out pages as needed and that it’s neat.

I print these pages back-to-back, cut them in half, and then use my Arc cutter to make the notches in the paper to work on the Arc circles. I add blank pages in between the weeks where I’ve been journalling. I love being able to look back and see my journal entries alongside the plan for the week so I can see the big picture – what was going on, how busy I was. Looking back, it makes it easier to try and figure out what’s working for me, and what’s not.

Starting off week three with this planner feeling like I’m on the right track. I especially love how having the weekend on the second page separates those days from the work week and makes space for tracking and reflection.
